Powerball guide: rules, prizes, tax and claiming

Understand United States's Powerball: number format, prize tiers, eligibility, claiming, tax cautions and official winner-location coverage.

What kind of lottery is it?

Powerball asks players to select 5 main numbers from 1 to 69. It also uses 1 bonus number from 1 to 26. Every valid play and draw is independent; historical frequency does not predict the next result.

Number format and winning

Representative prize matches include Jackpot · Match 5 · Match 4 + Powerball. The official game rules remain final for the full tier table, prize allocation, rollovers and bonus mechanics.

Eligibility and claiming prizes

U.S. citizenship or residency is not required. A visitor who meets the selling jurisdiction's age rule may buy from an authorized retailer. The prize must be claimed where the ticket was bought; deadlines and anonymity rules vary. Jackpot winners may choose 30 annual payments or a cash option.

Tax and estimated take-home prize

Qualifying lottery winnings may have 24% U.S. federal withholding. Nonresident aliens are generally subject to 30% withholding on gross U.S. gambling winnings unless a treaty changes the result; state tax may also apply.

Winner locations and official data

An official winner-retailer location is not published or has not yet been verified. World Lottery Map does not create estimated pins.
